The SGS 31187 is a solid carbide square end mill designed for precision milling operations in demanding industrial and machining applications. Built to Series 14 specifications, this centercutting tool features a 3/8 inch diameter with a 9/16 inch length of cut and a 30-degree helix angle that promotes efficient chip evacuation. The AlTiN (Aluminum Titanium Nitride) finish improves heat resistance and tool life when cutting hard or abrasive materials. With four spiral flutes and a straight-cylindrical shank, this stub-length end mill delivers rigidity and accuracy in tight setups. It is installed by machinists and CNC operators in production and job-shop environments.
The SGS 31187 is suited for milling a broad range of workpiece materials, including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, non-metals, and high-temperature alloys, corresponding to material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. Its stub-length geometry and 3/8 inch shank diameter make it a practical choice for short-reach slotting, profiling, and peripheral milling operations on vertical machining centers and manual knee mills alike. The right-hand cut and right-hand flute configuration is the standard orientation for conventional CNC toolpaths.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement or standard tooling selection for any application requiring a 3/8 inch diameter, 4-flute, solid carbide square end mill with a 3/8 inch straight-cylindrical shank suitable for ER collet chucks, end mill holders, and similar standard toolholding systems.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the tool changer or spindle locked before mounting or removing the end mill. Confirm runout with a dial indicator after seating the shank in the holder, and torque the collet nut or set screw according to the toolholder manufacturer specifications. Inspect the cutting edges for chips or wear before each use, as carbide tools can fail catastrophically if run with damaged flutes.
