The SGS 31161 is a single-end ball end mill designed for precision milling in a wide range of metalworking applications. Built from micrograin solid carbide and coated with AlTiN (aluminum titanium nitride), it delivers extended tool life and heat resistance during high-speed cutting operations. The 0.5-inch diameter cutting head features 3 flutes with a 30-degree right-hand spiral helix, producing efficient chip evacuation and a smooth finish. Overall length is 3 inches with a 1-inch length of cut. This tool is intended for use by machinists and CNC operators working in production shops, job shops, and tool rooms.
The SGS 31161 is suited for milling operations on a broad range of workpiece materials including hardened steels, cast irons, stainless steels, non-ferrous metals, high-temperature alloys, and titanium alloys, corresponding to material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S. It fits standard 1/2-inch shank tool holders and is appropriate for vertical machining centers, CNC mills, and manual knee mills where a regular-length ball end mill is required. The AlTiN coating makes it particularly effective in dry or near-dry cutting environments where heat buildup is a concern.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for standard 1/2-inch shank ball end mill applications in CNC and manual milling setups. Compatible with workpiece material codes H, K, M, N, P, and S as specified by the manufacturer.
Installation and tool changes should be performed by a qualified machinist following the machine tool manufacturer's guidelines. Power down and lock out the spindle before changing tooling. Ensure the shank is fully seated and the collet or end mill holder is torqued per the holder manufacturer's specification. Verify runout with a dial indicator before beginning a cut, and confirm spindle speed and feed rate settings are appropriate for the workpiece material before engaging the cut.
