The SGS 00861 is a solid carbide ball end mill designed for precision milling of contoured surfaces, slots, and complex 3D profiles. It features a 0.055-inch cutting diameter with a 0.165-inch length of cut (LOC) and a 30-degree helix angle that promotes smooth chip evacuation and reduces cutting forces. The two-flute geometry provides adequate chip clearance when working in softer metals, plastics, and composites. The micrograin carbide substrate delivers hardness and edge retention at small diameters where tool deflection and breakage are primary concerns. This tool is used by machinists and toolmakers on CNC milling machines and machining centers where fine-detail work requires tight tolerances and consistent performance.
The SGS 00861 is suited for precision profiling, die and mold work, and finish passes on contoured features in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel. Ensure the spindle is fully stopped and the machine is in a safe, locked-out state before changing tooling. Seat the 1/8-inch shank fully into a properly sized collet or end mill holder and torque to the tool holder manufacturer's specification. At small diameters, minimize runout by using a precision collet; excessive runout accelerates edge chipping and reduces tool life.
