The SECO 74004042 is a solid carbide, uncoated triangular turning insert in the TCMT series, designed for precision metal cutting in demanding machining environments. Identified by industry standard number TCMT21.52-F1HX, this insert features a 60-degree included angle, a 1/4-inch inscribed circle (0.2500 inches), and a sharp cutting edge style with an F1 chip breaker geometry. The HX grade is an uncoated carbide formulation suitable for applications where coatings would reduce edge sharpness or introduce thermal concerns. Relief angle is 7 degrees with a positive rake, and the insert is held via screw-on mounting. Tolerance code M and clearance code C apply to this style. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in precision turning and boring operations will find this insert appropriate for their setups.
This insert is primarily intended for machining superalloys and titanium (workpiece material code S), with secondary compatibility extending to steels (M), cast irons (K), non-ferrous materials (N), and hardened materials (H). Material grades S10, S20, and S25 apply. Suitable multi-use applications include turning, back turning, facing, and boring operations on CNC lathes and manual turning centers in both production and job-shop environments. The F1 chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation during finishing and semi-finishing passes on difficult-to-machine materials.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard TCMT-series insert compatible with screw-on turning toolholders accepting TCMT 21.52 style inserts per ANSI and ISO standards.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamping screw to secure the insert; do not overtighten by feel alone. Inspect the toolholder pocket and seating surface for chips or wear before seating a new insert.
