The SECO 17012972 is a cobalt ball end mill designed for demanding material removal in production machining environments. Part of the SPB540 series, this single-end tool features a 1 inch mill diameter, a 6 inch length of cut, and an extra-long 8.5 inch overall length that allows access to deep cavities and tall workpiece features. The 4-flute spiral geometry supports both roughing and finishing operations. A TiCN physical vapor deposition coating reduces friction and extends tool life when cutting ferrous and high-temperature alloy materials. The Weldon flat shank provides a positive drive connection and resists pullout under heavy feed loads.
This end mill is suited for vertical and horizontal machining centers where extended reach into deep pockets, molds, dies, or complex contoured surfaces is required. The right-hand cutting and right-hand flute direction are standard for conventional CNC milling setups. Primary workpiece materials include steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys. The 30 degree medium helix angle balances chip evacuation with cutting edge strength across these material groups. Machinists and CNC programmers working in job shops, tool and die, aerospace, and general fabrication will find this tool applicable to a wide range of applications.
Designed for use in standard 1 inch toolholders with Weldon flat setscrew retention. Compatible with CNC vertical and horizontal machining centers capable of accommodating an 8.5 inch overall tool length. Suitable for steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and non-ferrous metals, and high-temperature alloys per SECO material codes P, M, K, N, and S.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before inserting or removing tooling. Seat the Weldon flat fully against the setscrew to achieve proper grip and minimize runout; maximum TIR is specified at 0.001 inch. Verify tool projection and clearance against the workpiece and fixture before initiating a new program, particularly given the extra-long reach of this tool.
