The SECO 17002978 is a single-end square end mill ground from micrograin solid carbide, intended for precision milling of aluminum and non-ferrous materials. It measures 0.5 inches in cutting diameter with a 2-inch length of cut and a 4-inch overall length. The 45-degree helix spiral flute geometry promotes efficient chip evacuation and smooth surface finishes in softer alloys. With a bright, uncoated finish, this end mill is well suited for high-speed aluminum passes where coating buildup or heat retention would be a concern. Machinists and toolroom operators working in job shops or production environments are the primary users.
This end mill fits standard 0.5-inch straight-shank tool holders and is classified as a long-length style, making it appropriate for setups requiring additional reach beyond a standard-length tool. Its center-cutting design allows plunge entry directly into the workpiece. Right-hand cut and right-hand flute orientation are consistent with conventional CNC machining center setups. The Series A245 designation identifies it within the SECO product line as a general-purpose geometry optimized for non-ferrous applications including aluminum, brass, copper, and similar materials.
Designed as a replacement or production-stock end mill for standard 0.5-inch collet chucks, milling chucks, and end mill holders used on CNC vertical machining centers and manual knee mills. Primary workpiece material class is aluminum and non-ferrous (material code N).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the control placed in E-stop or lock-out before changing tooling. Verify holder bore cleanliness and tighten to the tool holder manufacturer's specified torque range using a calibrated torque wrench. Confirm runout against the TIR maximum specification before beginning a production run.
