The SECO 02960491 is a CNMG542-M5 indexable turning insert designed for steel and cast iron machining in CNC turning centers and manual lathes. It carries the TP1501 manufacturer grade, a Duratomic CVD multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr that targets wear resistance and heat control in continuous and interrupted steel cuts. The insert has an 80-degree diamond shape, a negative rake geometry, and a chamfered-and-honed cutting edge style. With four cutting edges per insert and a neutral hand orientation, it suits a wide range of turning, facing, and boring operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible toolholders sized for the CNMG series.
This insert is intended for P-category primary workpiece materials (steel, material grades P10 and P20) and K- and H-category secondary materials including cast iron and hard materials. The M5 chip breaker geometry is suited to medium-depth roughing and semi-finishing passes. It is appropriate for multi-axis turning centers and two-axis CNC lathes in production environments where consistent tool life across steel components is a priority. The insert is held by clamp, pin, or lever-lock systems compatible with the CNMG holder family.
Designed for use in CNMG-series toolholders accepting a 5/8-inch inscribed circle insert with a 1/4-inch thickness and a 0.25-inch hole diameter. Holding methods include clamp, pin, and lever-lock styles. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards; ISO code CNMG160608-M5, industry standard number CNMG542-M5.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing the insert. Inspect the toolholder pocket and clamping components for chips or wear before installing a fresh edge. Do not exceed the maximum depth of cut or feed rates specified in the toolholder manufacturer documentation for the CNMG insert size.
