The SECO 02960486 is a solid carbide turning insert in the CNMG-M5 series, designed for general-purpose metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries the industry standard designation CNMG433-M5 and ISO code CNMG120412-M5. The insert features a CVD-applied Duratomic multilayer coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and Cr — engineered to extend tool life in steel and cast iron applications. The 80-degree diamond shape (insert shape code C) provides a strong cutting geometry with a negative rake angle and a chamfered and honed cutting edge style. Four usable cutting edges are available per insert. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible toolholders for boring, facing, and turning operations.
This insert is suited for roughing to semi-finishing passes on steel and cast iron workpieces in both production and job-shop environments. The M5 chip breaker geometry is optimized for medium-duty cutting conditions where chip control is critical. The neutral hand orientation makes it compatible with a wide range of right-hand and left-hand toolholder configurations. Holding methods include clamp, pin, and lever lock. It is classified under material grades P01 and P10, targeting low-to-medium carbon steel and gray cast iron as primary workpiece materials.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders that accept a 1/2-inch inscribed circle insert with a 3/16-inch thickness and a 0.2028-inch hole diameter. Compatible holding methods are clamp, pin, and lever lock. Suitable for boring, facing, and turning operations on steel (material code P) and cast iron (material code K) workpieces.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down or lock out the machine spindle before seating or indexing any insert. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before clamping. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's specified clamping torque and procedure — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the carbide insert.
