The SECO 02013 is a cobalt tool bit blank designed for use in custom tooling applications where a pre-ground, solid blank is needed as the starting material for lathe bits, form tools, or specialty cutting tools. Manufactured from WKE45-grade cobalt high-speed steel, this blank measures 0.5 inches wide by 0.5 inches high with a 4-inch overall length and a square end profile. WKE45 cobalt HSS offers elevated hardness and heat resistance compared to standard M2 HSS, making it well-suited for interrupted cuts and harder workpiece materials. Machinists and tool grinders select this blank when standard off-the-shelf geometries do not meet the required profile.
This tool bit blank is used in machine shops, maintenance facilities, and production environments where operators grind their own cutting tools to a custom profile. The square cross-section and uniform 4-inch length provide sufficient stock for grinding single-point lathe tools, threading tools, boring bits, or other special-purpose cutters. It is appropriate for use on manual lathes, turret lathes, and similar metal-cutting equipment. The cobalt content supports performance on alloy steels, stainless steels, and other materials that generate elevated cutting temperatures.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and standard-format tool bit blank compatible with 0.5-inch tool holders used on manual and semi-automatic lathes in general metalworking applications.
Grinding of tool bit blanks should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolmaker using appropriate bench or surface grinders with wheels rated for high-speed steel. Secure the workpiece firmly during grinding to maintain consistent geometry and avoid overheating the blank, which can reduce hardness. Personal protective equipment including eye protection and grinding gloves is required. Follow shop safety procedures and applicable OSHA standards for grinding operations.
