The SECO 00078017 is a laydown threading insert designed for internal thread cutting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Manufactured from solid carbide in the CP500 grade with a micrograin substrate, it carries a PVD-applied TiAlN/TiN coating for extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. The insert is configured for right-hand internal threading with a 60-degree included angle, covers a thread range of 14 to 8 TPI (pitch 1.75 to 3.00 mm), and fits toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. It belongs to the Snap Tap series and conforms to ISO standards. Machinists and tool-room technicians specify this insert for partial-profile internal thread work where consistent form accuracy is required.
This insert is suited for internal threading of universal workpiece materials including steels, stainless steels, cast irons, and superalloys, corresponding to material codes P, M, K, and S. The 60-degree profile accommodates standard unified and metric thread forms. It is used in production turning environments as well as job-shop applications where a single insert grade must cover diverse material requirements. The A2 chipbreaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation during bore threading, reducing the risk of chip packing in blind or semi-blind holes.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement or direct-use threading insert for toolholders accepting the 16NR insert style with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle in the Snap Tap series.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and all motion is locked out before indexing or replacing the insert. Seat the insert firmly into the toolholder pocket and verify proper clamping torque per the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert seat for chips or debris that could cause improper seating and affect thread form accuracy.
