The SECO 00049867 is a laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting at 18 threads per inch (TPI). Built from solid carbide with a TiAlN/TiN PVD coating under the CP500 grade designation, this insert delivers thermal and wear resistance suited to production threading environments. The 16ER insert style seats in right-hand external threading toolholders from the Snap-Tap series. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle (IC) and a thickness of 0.1366 inches, it fits standard laydown pockets without modification. The A1 chipbreaker geometry promotes controlled chip flow during threading passes. Machinists and CNC operators install this insert for precision thread profiles on turned components.
This insert is used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes equipped with compatible Snap-Tap series toolholders. It is suited for threading cast iron, stainless steel, and carbon steel workpieces, corresponding to ISO material codes K, M, and P respectively. The 60-degree included angle matches the UN thread form standard. Typical applications include threaded shafts, fittings, fastener blanks, and other externally threaded turned parts in job shop and production settings where consistent thread geometry and insert-to-insert repeatability are required.
Designed for use in right-hand external Snap-Tap series laydown threading toolholders accepting the 16ER insert style with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle seating geometry.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed with the machine spindle stopped and all energy sources locked out per shop safety procedures. Ensure the toolholder pocket and clamping surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Use the correct torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer's specification for the clamping screw — do not overtighten. Inspect the insert edge condition before each run to confirm thread profile integrity.
