The SECO 00049779 is a laydown threading insert designed for cutting external NPTF pipe threads at 11.5 threads per inch. Built from micrograin solid carbide and finished with a PVD-applied TiAlN/TiN coating, this insert delivers sharp cutting edges and extended tool life across a broad range of workpiece materials. It belongs to the Snap Tap series and carries the CP500 grade designation. With a 3/8-inch inscribed circle and a thickness of 0.1366 inches, the insert fits standard toolholders configured for 16ER-style laydown inserts. Licensed machinists and toolroom professionals use this insert for precision thread-forming on pipe fittings, valve bodies, and related components requiring NPTF sealing threads.
This insert is suited for external right-hand NPTF threading operations in both production and job-shop environments. The 60-degree included angle and a corner radius of 0.0020 inches support accurate thread form. The universal material grade compatibility — covering ISO material groups K, M, N, P, and S — makes it appropriate for a wide range of metals including cast iron, stainless steel, aluminum, carbon steel, and heat-resistant alloys. It is a practical choice wherever tapered pipe thread standards require a pressure-tight seal without a thread sealant compound.
Designed as an OEM-compatible replacement or production insert for 16ER-style laydown threading toolholders used in external NPTF pipe thread operations. Verify toolholder seat angle and insert pocket dimensions before installation.
Installation of threading inserts should be performed by qualified machinists or toolroom personnel following the toolholder manufacturer's torque and clamping specifications. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and the toolholder is secured in the turret before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris prior to seating the insert. Follow applicable shop safety standards and machine guarding requirements during setup.
