The SECO 00016478 is a solid carbide multi-directional turning insert engineered for external turning, grooving, and parting operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built to the MDT series platform, this insert carries a CP500 manufacturer grade and features a PVD-applied TiAlN/TiN coating over a micrograin solid carbide substrate. It delivers a maximum cutting width of 0.157 inches, a cutting height of 0.177 inches, and a corner radius range of 0.008 to 0.031 inches. The FT chipbreaker geometry and neutral hand orientation make it suitable for a wide range of turning applications across multiple workpiece material categories. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install and index this insert as part of a standard toolholder change.
This insert is designed for multi-directional turning operations where versatility across workpiece materials is required. Primary workpiece material codes for this insert include H (hardened materials), K (cast iron), M (stainless steel), N (non-ferrous), P (steel), and S (superalloys and titanium). The double-end configuration extends usable tool life between indexing intervals. It suits both light finishing passes and moderate material removal rates depending on depth of cut and feed rate parameters selected at the machine.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement insert for MDT series multi-directional turning toolholders accepting LCMF insert style with size code 160402.
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC setup technician with the machine spindle stopped and all axes at a safe home position. Use the appropriate torx or hex key specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat and torque the clamping screw. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping components for wear or contamination before seating a new insert. Follow the toolholder manufacturer documentation for proper seating and clamping procedures.
