The SECO 00008230 is a solid carbide, uncoated turning insert in the TPG-Flat Top series, designed for precision metal cutting in demanding machining applications. It carries the industry standard designation TPG320F and manufacturer grade 883, a substrate engineered for high wear resistance to high toughness in superalloy and titanium work. The insert features a 60-degree triangular shape with a positive rake and positive side clearance, delivering three usable cutting edges per insert. Corner radius measures 0.008 inches and inscribed circle diameter is 0.375 inches. Installed via a clamp-style holding method, this insert suits CNC lathes and turning centers operated by machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in aerospace and high-temperature alloy applications.
This insert is suited for turning, boring, facing, and back turning operations on superalloys and titanium as the primary workpiece material, with secondary suitability for stainless steel, cast iron, non-ferrous metals, and hardened materials. The flat-top chip breaker geometry and honed cutting edge style make it appropriate for operations requiring controlled chip flow and consistent tool life in interrupted or continuous cuts. Insert length runs 0.650 inches, and maximum depth of cut reaches 0.622 inches, making it a versatile option for medium-stock-removal passes on difficult-to-machine materials.
Designed for use in clamp-style TPG toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle triangular insert with a TPG320 ANSI size code and TPG160301 ISO size code. Compatible toolholder lines should specify clearance code P and tolerance code G. Suitable for multi-use applications including turning, boring, facing, and back turning.
Installation and replacement of carbide turning inserts should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and all power isolated before toolholder access. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Use the manufacturer-recommended torque driver for the clamping screw to avoid microcracking the carbide. Verify insert orientation and edge index before resuming cutting operations.
