The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS TM480-20N is a straight flute thread mill designed for cutting 5/8-20 UN threads in both external and internal applications. Built from powdered metal and finished with a TiCN coating, this tool delivers consistent thread form and extended tool life in ferrous and non-ferrous materials. It runs on a 1/2 inch shank and features 6 flutes for improved chip evacuation and finish quality. With a 0.48 inch cutting diameter and a 1.12 inch length of cut, it suits a broad range of thread-milling operations on CNC machining centers. Machinists and toolroom technicians select this tool when thread quality and repeatability are the priority.
This thread mill is suited for production and job-shop environments where a single tool must handle both external and internal 5/8-20 UN thread forms. The straight flute geometry keeps cutting forces predictable and works well in applications where tool deflection must be minimized. At 4 inches overall length with a 1/2 inch shank, it fits standard ER and side-lock toolholders commonly found on 3-axis and 4-axis machining centers. It is a practical choice for threading bores and bosses in aluminum, steel, and stainless applications where tap breakage is a concern.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation, with 1/2 inch straight shank compatible with standard ER collet chucks and side-lock toolholders. Thread standard is UN; minimum nominal thread diameter is 5/8 inch.
Thread milling requires a CNC control capable of helical interpolation - confirm program capability before setup. Secure the shank fully in the toolholder to the recommended gauge line depth and verify runout before cutting. Use appropriate feeds, speeds, and coolant for the workpiece material; do not exceed the tool rated depth of cut per pass. Handle carbide and powdered metal tooling carefully to avoid chipping the cutting edges during setup and storage.
