The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS TM240-32N is a straight flute thread mill designed for cutting 5/16-32 UNEF threads in both external and internal applications. Manufactured from powdered metal and finished with a TiCN coating for improved wear resistance and tool life, this mill features 3 flutes and a 0.24-inch cutting diameter with a 0.669-inch length of cut. The 1/4-inch shank diameter and 2.5-inch overall length make it compatible with standard CNC machining center toolholders. It is used by machinists and tooling specialists performing precision thread milling operations on a variety of workpiece materials.
This thread mill is suited for shops running CNC milling operations that require a single tool to handle both external and internal 5/16-32 UNEF thread profiles. The straight flute geometry keeps the tool straightforward to apply in standard thread milling cycles. At 32 teeth per inch with a 0.669-inch length of cut, it covers the full thread depth for typical 5/16-32 UNEF fastener thread engagement lengths in one helical pass. Typical applications include precision components in aerospace, automotive, and general manufacturing where UNEF thread tolerances are required.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers with standard 1/4-inch collet or toolholder systems capable of executing helical thread milling cycles for 5/16-32 UNEF thread profiles.
Thread mills are installed by qualified machinists in CNC machining centers using appropriate collet chucks or end mill holders sized for the 1/4-inch shank. Verify runout at the toolholder before beginning the thread milling cycle, as excessive runout will affect thread quality. Program the CNC controller with the correct helical interpolation cycle for the target thread pitch and diameter before cutting. Always inspect the tool edge condition prior to use and follow the machine tool builder guidelines for speeds and feeds appropriate to the workpiece material.
