The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS SPTM490FA-6LA is a solid carbide single profile thread mill designed for cutting internal 7/8-6 threads in CNC machining applications. It runs at 6 TPI with a 0.49-inch cutting diameter and a 3.5-inch overall length, making it suited for deep-reach internal threading operations. The tool features an AlTiN+ coating applied over a submicron carbide substrate, which improves wear resistance and thermal stability at higher cutting speeds. With 4 flutes and a 0.26-inch neck diameter, it is built for controlled chip evacuation in tight-bore threading scenarios. Machinists and CNC operators in aerospace, oil and gas, and general machining shops are the primary installers.
This thread mill is intended for internal threading operations on CNC machining centers using helical interpolation. It targets applications where a 7/8-6 thread form is required in materials that benefit from carbide tooling and AlTiN+ coating performance, such as hardened steels, stainless steels, and high-temperature alloys. The 1.3-inch length of cut and 1.3-inch neck length provide clearance for threading blind or through holes where standard taps may not be practical. The 1/2-inch shank diameter is compatible with standard ER and hydraulic collet toolholders commonly found on CNC machining centers.
Designed for use in CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation for internal 7/8-6 thread milling applications. Fits standard 1/2-inch ID collet toolholders including ER32 and comparable systems.
Installation and use require a CNC machining center with helical interpolation capability programmed to the correct thread pitch and diameter. Secure the tool in a balanced, properly torqued collet or hydraulic toolholder before spindle operation. Always verify spindle speed, feed rate, and depth of cut against the manufacturer's recommended cutting data for the workpiece material. Inspect the cutting edge and coating condition before each use and replace the tool if chipping or wear is detected.
