The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS SPTM160L is a single profile thread mill designed for cutting internal and external threads across a range from 12-24 to 12-56, covering 24 to 56 TPI. Built from submicron-grade solid carbide, this tool delivers the rigidity and edge retention required for precise thread-form geometry in hardened and difficult-to-machine materials. The three-flute geometry balances chip evacuation with feed rate capability. With a 0.16-inch cutting diameter and a 0.088-inch neck diameter, the SPTM160L is suited to small-diameter thread milling on CNC machining centers where tool clearance is limited. Licensed machinists and CNC programmers working in job shops, aerospace, medical device, and precision manufacturing environments are the primary users of this tool.
The SPTM160L is applied in CNC milling operations requiring a single-point thread profile tool capable of producing both internal and external threads without a tool change. The 0.65-inch length of cut accommodates standard thread engagement depths in the number 12 screw size range. The bright, uncoated finish makes this tool suitable for use in applications where coating buildup on the cutting edge is a concern, such as threading aluminum, brass, or other non-ferrous materials, as well as certain stainless and tool steel applications where the operator manages cutting parameters directly.
Designed for use on CNC machining centers capable of helical interpolation; compatible with number 12 screw thread applications spanning 24 to 56 TPI in internal and external configurations. Accepts a 3/16-inch tool holder or collet chuck.
Installation and operation of this tool requires a CNC machining center with helical interpolation capability programmed to the correct thread pitch and helix angle for the target thread form. Secure the 3/16-inch shank in a precision collet or milling chuck to minimize runout, as runout directly affects thread quality at this diameter. Verify spindle speed, feed rate, and coolant strategy are set per the tooling manufacturer recommendations for the workpiece material before engaging the cut. Do not use this tool in a conventional drill press or manual milling machine.
