The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS BB188 is a radial relief boring bar designed for internal turning and precision bore work on metal components. Machined from submicron-grade solid carbide and left uncoated, it delivers consistent edge integrity in tight-tolerance applications. The bar accepts a minimum bore diameter of 0.185 inches and reaches a maximum bore depth of 1 inch, making it well-suited for short, precise bores where rigidity and surface finish matter. With a 3/16-inch shank diameter and an overall length of 2 inches, this right-hand-cut tool is compact and sized for small-bore work on CNC lathes and manual turning centers. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in precision shops are the primary users.
The BB188 fits applications where small internal diameters and shallow bore depths are required. Typical use cases include finish boring of hydraulic valve bodies, precision instrument housings, medical device components, and similar small-part turning operations. The radial relief geometry reduces cutting forces, which is especially beneficial in thin-wall or difficult-to-fixture workpieces. The right-hand cutting direction suits standard spindle rotation on conventional setups. This bar is sold individually and is intended for single-point boring operations on metalworking lathes and machining centers.
Designed as an OEM-style single-point boring bar for use in CNC and manual turning centers that accept a 3/16-inch round shank toolholder.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist familiar with single-point boring bar setup. Secure the shank firmly in a compatible toolholder and verify there is no overhang beyond what is needed for the bore depth, as excessive extension reduces rigidity and increases chatter risk. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing or adjusting the bar. Confirm boring bar runout and alignment before taking finish passes.
