The SCIENTIFIC CUTTING TOOLS B290500A is a solid carbide boring bar designed for precision internal boring operations on metalworking lathes and machining centers. Built from submicron-grade carbide and finished with an AlTiN+ coating, it delivers the hardness and heat resistance required for demanding production and tool room applications. The bar has a 5/16-inch shank diameter and an overall length of 2.5 inches, with a minimum bore diameter of 0.29 inches and a maximum bore depth of 0.5 inches. The right-hand cutting direction suits standard turning setups. This tool is installed and used by machinists and CNC operators working in precision bore finishing and sizing applications.
This boring bar is suited for small-diameter internal boring work in residential and commercial machine shop environments, as well as production floor CNC turning applications. The compact shank diameter and short overall length make it appropriate for tight-clearance bores in workholding fixtures where larger bars cannot be used. It is commonly applied when finishing or opening existing bores to close tolerances in ferrous and non-ferrous workpiece materials. The AlTiN+ coating extends tool life in dry or minimal-lubrication cutting conditions.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement and direct-fit boring bar for standard 5/16-inch boring bar holders used in CNC turning centers and manual lathes performing small-diameter internal boring operations.
Boring bars of this type are installed and set by qualified machinists or CNC operators. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before mounting or removing tooling. The shank must be clamped securely in a properly sized boring bar holder with adequate overhang minimized to reduce chatter. Follow the machine manufacturer guidelines and applicable shop safety procedures when setting tool offsets and depth of cut.
