The SANDVIK COROMANT 8020987 is a CPMT-series solid carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries an 80-degree diamond (C) insert shape with a neutral hand orientation and a corner radius of 0.0156 inches. The insert is finished with a multi-layer CVD coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN — under manufacturer grade 4415, providing wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted cuts. Insert thickness measures 0.1563 inches. This insert is installed by machinists and CNC tooling specialists as a clamp- or screw-held replaceable cutting edge in standard CPMT-style toolholders.
This insert is optimized for cutting steel as its primary workpiece material, with secondary suitability for cast iron applications (ISO material code K). The CPMT-PF series with the PF chip breaker geometry is suited to finishing passes at controlled depths of cut and feed rates on steel components in production turning environments, both job shop and high-volume manufacturing. The ISO designation CPMT 09 T3 04-PF 4415 identifies this insert within the standardized indexable insert system, making cross-referencing to compatible toolholders straightforward.
Designed as a direct replacement for any CPMT 09 T3 04-PF 4415 grade insert seat in standard CPMT-style indexable turning toolholders with clamp or screw holding. Confirm toolholder seat clearance code P and tolerance code M before installation.
Installation is performed by tooling technicians or machinists. Ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped and locked out before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and seating tool for the specific CPMT clamp or screw-lock style toolholder to avoid cracking the carbide. Inspect the insert seat and chip pocket for debris before seating the new insert, and verify proper seating contact before resuming cutting operations.
