The SANDVIK COROMANT 8019698 is a CNMU-series carbide turning insert designed for steel machining in roughing and medium machining operations. Manufactured to ISO code CNMU 12 04 12-PM 4425, it features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN that delivers high wear resistance while maintaining toughness across a range of cutting conditions. The insert has a diamond (rhombic) 80-degree shape with a neutral hand orientation, a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0469-inch corner radius. It is held in the toolholder by clamp or screw methods and carries a negative side clearance (clearance code N) with tolerance code M. CNC machinists and toolroom technicians working with steel workpieces are the primary users.
This insert is suited for turning steel in both production and job-shop environments where the application alternates between roughing passes and medium-depth cuts. The PM chip breaker geometry is optimized for steel (ISO material group P), handling interrupted and continuous cuts where controlled chip formation is critical. The grade 4425 balances wear resistance with sufficient toughness to absorb the higher cutting forces typical of roughing operations. It is sized at ANSI insert code 433 and ISO size code 120412, fitting standard CNMU-style toolholders used on CNC turning centers and manual lathes equipped for negative-rake inserts.
Designed for use in standard CNMU-style negative-rake turning toolholders accepting a 0.5000-inch inscribed circle (ANSI size 433, ISO size 120412) insert. Optimized for ISO material group P (steel) workpieces across roughing and medium machining applications.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or replacing inserts. Ensure the insert pocket is clean and free of chips or debris before placing the insert, as contamination under the insert seat affects dimensional accuracy and can cause premature edge failure. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's torque specification for the clamp screw, and verify insert seating visually before resuming cuts.
