The SANDVIK COROMANT 7861226 is a VNMG-style solid carbide turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiN, and TiCN under manufacturer grade 4425, a coated carbide grade engineered primarily for steel machining. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape (V), a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, a 0.0313-inch corner radius, and an LC chip breaker geometry suited for light to medium finishing cuts. Neutral hand orientation makes it usable in both right- and left-hand toolholders that accept the VNMG platform.
This insert is intended for production turning of steel workpieces (ISO P material group) in both roughing and finishing applications where controlled chip formation is required. The LC chip breaker geometry promotes tight chip control at moderate depths of cut and feed rates. It fits toolholders designed for VNMG inserts with clamp or screw-type holding methods. The 35-degree included angle provides good strength while allowing access to moderately tight shoulder profiles. Typical users include machinists, tool room operators, and CNC turning technicians in job shop and production environments.
Designed as a direct-fit replacement for VNMG 16 04 08-LC 4425 (ISO code) and VNMG 332-LC format toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle diamond insert with clamp or screw-style clamping. ISO industry standard number: VNMG 16 04 08-LC 4425.
Installation should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician with the machine in a locked-out, de-energized state before any insert change. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces and verify the clamping screw or clamp finger torque matches the toolholder manufacturer specification before resuming cuts. Inspect the insert pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert, as a damaged pocket will compromise edge repeatability. Follow applicable shop safety procedures and toolholder OEM guidelines when setting tool offsets after an insert change.
