The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860952 is a solid carbide turning insert engineered for precision metal-cutting applications on CNC and manual lathes. Part of the 3-80-M5W series, this insert features a multi-layer CVD coating — TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN — applied over a carbide substrate in manufacturer grade 4425. The coating stack provides wear resistance and thermal stability during continuous and interrupted cuts on steel workpieces. The insert carries a neutral hand orientation, a 0.0469 inch corner radius, a width of 0.3937 inches, and a thickness of 0.4331 inches. The M5W chip breaker geometry is designed to control chip flow across a broad feed and depth-of-cut range.
This insert is intended for turning operations on steel and similar ISO K-category materials. It suits both roughing and semi-finishing passes where consistent chip control and long tool life are priorities. Installation is accomplished via clamp or screw holding methods, compatible with standard 3-80 series toolholders. Machinists and tool-and-die professionals working in production shops, job shops, and maintenance environments are the primary users of this insert grade and geometry.
Designed for use with 3-80 series toolholders. Primary workpiece material is steel; secondary workpiece material falls under ISO K category. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and insert size code 1011 before installation.
Insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the spindle stopped and the machine in a locked-out, de-energized state per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Seat the insert fully in the toolholder pocket before applying clamp or screw torque. Inspect the pocket for chips or debris that could cause seating errors or premature edge failure. Do not exceed the toolholder manufacturer's recommended cutting parameters for this insert size and grade.
