The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860554 is a solid carbide turning insert in the WNMG432-QM 4415 configuration, designed for general turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. This insert features an 80-degree trigon (W-shape) geometry with a neutral hand orientation and a 1/2-inch inscribed circle. The 4415 grade uses a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiCN, and TiN, providing thermal resistance and wear protection suited for interrupted and continuous cuts. The QM chip breaker geometry controls chip flow across a range of feed rates and depths of cut. CNC machinists and toolroom technicians are the primary installers of this insert type.
This insert is engineered for turning steel (ISO material group P) as its primary workpiece material, with cast iron (ISO material group K) as the secondary application. It belongs to the SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series, a tooling platform used extensively in production turning environments, both in job shops and high-volume manufacturing. The insert seats via clamp or screw holding methods in compatible WNMG-style toolholders. Typical applications include roughing and semi-finishing passes on carbon steel, alloy steel, and gray cast iron components.
Designed for use in WNMG-style insert toolholders that accept a 1/2-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick trigon insert with a 0.203-inch hole diameter, held by clamp or screw. Compatible toolholders must conform to ISO WNMG 08 04 designation. Primary workpiece material compatibility is steel (ISO P); secondary compatibility is cast iron (ISO K).
Installation is performed by CNC machinists or toolroom technicians during insert indexing or replacement. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before accessing the toolholder. Seat the insert fully against the pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamp or screw to avoid insert rocking or premature edge failure. Inspect the toolholder pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
