The SANDVIK COROMANT 7860549 is a VNMG-style indexable turning insert in the T-Max P series, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It carries ISO code VNMG 16 04 04-QM 4415 and is manufactured from solid carbide with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of Al2O3, TiN, and TiCN. The 4415 grade and QM chip breaker geometry make this insert well suited for medium to roughing passes on steel and cast iron. The insert features a 35-degree diamond shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a 0.0156-inch (0.40 mm) corner radius. It is a neutral-hand insert, usable in both right-hand and left-hand toolholders where VNMG geometry is specified.
This insert is intended for production turning in job shop, aerospace, and general machining environments where steel and cast iron are the primary workpiece materials. The QM chip breaker is engineered to manage chip flow during medium-depth passes, reducing built-up edge and heat at the cutting zone. With four cutting edges per insert, it offers efficient tooling economy. It is installed by machinists and toolroom technicians operating manual or CNC turning equipment. The T-Max P series is a well-established SANDVIK COROMANT platform for external turning applications.
Designed for use in VNMG-style toolholders accepting a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, 3/16-inch thick, VNMG 16 04 insert size. Primary workpiece materials are steel (ISO P) and cast iron (ISO K). ISO code VNMG 16 04 04-QM 4415 and catalog number VNMG 331-QM apply to this insert.
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed with the machine powered off and the spindle fully stopped. Use the appropriate torque wrench and insert screw per the toolholder manufacturer's specification to seat the insert securely without over-tightening. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before indexing to a fresh cutting edge. This work is typically performed by a machinist or toolroom technician following the machine tool builder's tooling change procedures.
