The SANDVIK COROMANT 7859049 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert from the T-Max P series, designed for general turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a solid carbide substrate with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, which provides thermal resistance and wear protection across a range of cutting conditions. The insert carries an 80-degree diamond shape (Insert Shape Code C) with a neutral hand orientation and a 1.19 mm (0.0469 inch) corner radius. With four cutting edges per insert, it delivers a low per-edge cost for high-volume production environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert in compatible toolholders as a direct indexable replacement.
This insert is engineered primarily for steel machining (ISO material group P) and is rated as a secondary option for cast iron (ISO material group K). The T-Max P series targets productive, reliable turning at moderate to high cutting speeds where CVD coatings provide the thermal barrier needed to maintain edge integrity. Typical applications include external and internal diameter turning, facing, and profiling on production lathes. The PR chip breaker geometry is suited to continuous and light interrupted cuts in these material groups.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders accepting a 1/2 inch (12.70 mm) inscribed circle insert with a clamp or screw holding method. ISO code CNMG 12 04 12-PR 4415 can be used for cross-reference to compatible toolholder systems. Confirm toolholder pocket specifications before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench and manufacturer-specified clamping hardware for the toolholder; do not overtighten clamping screws by hand estimation. Inspect the toolholder pocket seat for debris, damage, or wear before seating a new insert, as a compromised seat will reduce edge life and dimensional accuracy.
