The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231512 is a VNMG332-MF 2220 series turning insert engineered for precision metal cutting in CNC lathe and turning center applications. Built from solid carbide with a CVD-applied multilayer TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN coating, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability across a broad range of cutting conditions. It features a 3/8 inch inscribed circle, a 1/32 inch corner radius, and a 35-degree diamond (V-shape) geometry. The neutral hand orientation suits standard toolholders. The MF chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation in finish to medium turning passes. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install these inserts as consumable cutting tools in indexable toolholder systems.
This insert is rated for primary use on stainless steel workpieces (ISO material code M), where CVD coating and the MF chip breaker work together to manage built-up edge and produce consistent chip control. It fits within the T-Max P series platform, which supports a wide range of turning operations including external profiling, facing, and longitudinal turning. With four available cutting edges per insert, it offers practical service life in production and job-shop environments where stainless and similar work-hardening alloys are common.
Designed for use in VNMG-style indexable toolholders that accept a 332 insert size with clamp and pin retention. ISO code VNMG 16 04 08-MF 2220. Verify toolholder pocket geometry and insert seat dimensions before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench and manufacturer-recommended seating hardware to secure the insert in the pocket — do not over-torque the clamp screw. Inspect the insert pocket for chips, debris, or wear before seating a new insert to ensure accurate positioning and prevent premature edge failure.
