The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231371 is a DCMT-style turning insert designed for precision external turning operations in CNC and manual lathe applications. Built from solid carbide and coated via CVD with a three-layer TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN stack, this insert delivers thermal resistance and wear protection suited for demanding cuts. It carries Sandvik grade 2220, a designation optimized for stainless steel machining. The 55-degree diamond insert shape provides a strong cutting edge geometry, while the UM chip breaker promotes reliable chip control across a range of feed rates and depths of cut. The insert is held by screw clamping and requires no special tooling beyond a standard torx or hex key appropriate to the tool holder.
This insert is intended for use in the CoroTurn 107 series tool holder system. Its primary workpiece material classification is stainless steel (ISO material group M), making it well suited for austenitic and duplex stainless grades common in food processing, pharmaceutical, and industrial fluid system components. A neutral hand orientation means it fits right-hand and left-hand holders that accept the DCMT insert style with a C clearance code and M tolerance code.
Designed for use with SANDVIK COROMANT CoroTurn 107 series tool holders that accept DCMT-style inserts with a C clearance code, M tolerance code, and screw-hole clamping. ISO code for this insert is DCMT 11 T3 08-UM 2220.
Installation and insert indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or tooling technician with the machine in a full stop, locked-out condition. Use the correct torx or hex key specified by the tool holder manufacturer to seat the clamping screw to the recommended engagement without overtightening. Inspect the insert pocket seat and clamping screw for damage or debris before seating the new insert. Verify insert orientation and chip breaker direction before resuming cuts.
