The SANDVIK COROMANT 7231330 is a CNMG432-XM 2220 series turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Built from solid carbide with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, this insert delivers thermal resistance and wear protection needed for demanding turning operations. The XM chip breaker geometry and 80-degree diamond insert shape provide stable cutting action and predictable chip formation. With a 0.5 inch inscribed circle and a corner radius of 0.0313 inches (1/32 inch), it is suited for medium to finishing passes. Machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, aerospace, or industrial manufacturing environments install this insert into compatible CNMG-style toolholders as a direct replacement.
This insert is primarily intended for turning stainless steel workpieces, designated ISO material code M. The T-Max P series geometry is engineered to handle the work-hardening tendencies and heat generation associated with stainless steel grades. It is applicable in both roughing and semi-finishing contexts depending on feed and depth-of-cut parameters selected by the operator. The neutral hand orientation allows use in both conventional and climb cutting directions, giving setup flexibility on a variety of part geometries and lathe configurations encountered in production and repair turning work.
Designed as an OEM-style replacement turning insert for CNMG432 toolholder pockets within the SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series. ISO designation CNMG 12 04 08-XM 2220. Consult your toolholder documentation to confirm CNMG432 insert pocket compatibility before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque wrench per the toolholder manufacturer's seating specification and ensure the insert seats fully against the pocket walls before tightening the clamp or pin. Inspect the pocket for wear or debris before seating a new insert to prevent edge chipping on first contact.
