The SANDVIK COROMANT 7046609 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for high-productivity metal removal in steel machining applications. It carries the ANSI and ISO designation 745R-2109E-M31 1130 and belongs to the 745 series. The insert features a heptagon shape with 14 cutting edges, a double-sided configuration, and a negative rake geometry at 44 degrees. The AlTiCrN coating is applied via PVD process, delivering heat and wear resistance suited for interrupted cuts and continuous milling passes in steel. At 0.3543 inches thick and 0.8268 inches inscribed circle diameter, it fits 745-series cutter bodies requiring a screw-held, right-hand insert with an M31 chip breaker.
This insert is intended for milling steel workpieces in industrial and job-shop environments and is compatible with 745-series cutter bodies. It is suited to both roughing and semi-finishing operations where a corner-rounded cutting edge style is preferred to reduce chipping and extend edge life. The M31 chip breaker geometry manages chip flow across the P material grade range, making it appropriate for general steel, stainless, and non-ferrous applications as classified under material grades P30, M15, and N15. Licensed machinists and CNC setup technicians are the primary installers.
Designed for use with 745-series cutter bodies. The insert size code is 2109, with an inscribed circle of 0.8268 inches (21.00 mm) and a thickness of 0.3543 inches (9.00 mm). ANSI and ISO codes are both listed as 745R-2109E-M31 1130. Verify cutter body pocket specifications before ordering.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician following the cutter body manufacturer torque guidelines for the insert clamping screw. Power down and lock out the spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the pocket seat and screw thread for wear or debris before seating the new insert. Do not use damaged or chipped inserts, as uneven seating can cause cutter body damage or workpiece dimensional errors.
