The SANDVIK COROMANT 6971887 is a solid carbide milling insert in the 490 series, designed for high-productivity face and shoulder milling operations. This insert carries the ANSI and ISO designation 490R-08T308M-PM 1130 and features an AlTiCrN coating applied via PVD process. The square shape with a 90-degree included angle and four usable cutting edges makes it an efficient choice for production environments. A positive rake angle of 26 degrees and a 15-degree relief angle reduce cutting forces and support smooth chip evacuation. Maximum depth of cut reaches 5.50 mm. The PM chip breaker geometry is suited for medium machining conditions across a range of workpiece materials.
This insert is intended for milling steel, stainless steel, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials, corresponding to ISO material codes P, M, S, and H. It fits within the 490 cutter series and is appropriate for right-hand cutting applications. Typical use cases include face milling, shoulder milling, and ramping in both CNC machining centers and manual milling setups. The insert is held in place by a screw-clamp method. Licensed machinists and CNC programmers working in aerospace, oil and gas, automotive, and general metalworking will encounter this insert in high-demand roughing and semi-finishing passes.
Designed for use with Sandvik Coromant 490 series milling cutter bodies. The ANSI and ISO code 490R-08T308M-PM 1130 confirms fitment with 490 series toolholders accepting an 08T308 insert size in a right-hand configuration.
This insert is installed and replaced by machinists or tooling technicians following standard insert-indexing procedures. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before seating or removing any insert. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the cutter body manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — do not overtighten or use impact tools on insert screws. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or damage before each insert change.
