The SANDVIK COROMANT 6971863 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in R390 series face and shoulder milling cutters. Identified by ANSI and ISO code R390-18 06 08M-PM 1130 and carrying the 1130 manufacturer grade, this insert features a parallelogram shape with a 90-degree included angle and a positive rake geometry that reduces cutting forces on the workpiece. The PVD-applied AlTiCrN coating delivers heat resistance and edge durability across a wide range of materials. The insert measures 11.00 mm (0.4331 inches) wide and 6.33 mm (0.2492 inches) thick, with a corner radius of 1/32 inch (0.0315 inches). It provides two cutting edges per insert and is held in the cutter body by a screw-clamp method.
This insert is suited for milling operations on steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials, covering material application codes P, M, N, S, and H. It is appropriate for both roughing and finishing passes where a maximum depth of cut of 16.00 mm (0.6299 inches) is required. The PM chip breaker geometry manages chip evacuation effectively across these material groups. Typical applications include shoulder milling, face milling, and ramping operations in production environments where consistent tool life and dimensional accuracy are priorities. The insert is right-hand oriented and is a single-sided design.
Designed for use with M-40 and R390 series milling cutter bodies. Insert size code 180608 with inscribed circle in the range of 0.4000 to 0.5000 decimal inch and length in the range of 0.6000 to 0.6500 decimal inch. Conforms to ANSI and ISO standards under code R390-18 06 08M-PM 1130.
Installation is performed by a machinist or tooling technician using the screw-clamp holding method standard to R390-series cutter bodies. Ensure the cutter body and spindle are fully de-energized and locked out before seating or replacing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installation, as contamination will affect runout and edge performance. Follow the cutter body manufacturer torque specifications for the clamping screw, as over-tightening can fracture the carbide substrate.
