The SANDVIK COROMANT 6971767 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in R390 series face and shoulder milling cutters. Designated by ANSI and ISO code R390-17 04 04M-PM 1130, this single-sided parallelogram insert features a positive rake angle of 17 degrees and a PVD-applied AlTiCrN coating under grade 1130. The PM chip breaker geometry supports stable chip control across a range of cutting conditions. With a maximum depth of cut of 15.70 mm and 2 cutting edges, this insert delivers consistent performance in demanding metal removal applications. It is installed using a screw-holding method and is designed for right-hand cutting.
This insert is suited for milling steel, stainless steel, non-ferrous metals, superalloys, titanium, and hard materials, corresponding to material application codes P, M, N, S, and H. It is used in both roughing and finishing operations where positive-rake geometry reduces cutting forces on the workpiece. Typical applications include face milling, shoulder milling, and ramping operations on machining centers in production and job-shop environments. The R390 cutter series compatibility makes it a direct-fit replacement for tooling already set up with that system.
Designed for use in SANDVIK COROMANT R390 series milling cutter bodies. Insert size code 170404 and ANSI/ISO designation R390-17 04 04M-PM 1130 should be verified against the cutter body specification before installation.
Installation is performed by machining professionals using the appropriate Torx or hex key to seat the clamping screw — consult the cutter body documentation for the correct screw torque procedure. Always index or replace inserts with the machine spindle fully stopped and locked out per applicable safety procedures. Inspect the cutter pocket and seating surfaces for chips or debris before seating a new insert, as contamination affects runout and tool life. Wear cut-resistant gloves when handling carbide inserts, as edges are sharp.
