The SANDVIK COROMANT 6868550 is a CNMG432-KR 3225 series turning insert designed for precision external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a solid carbide substrate with a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN, making it well suited for cutting cast iron and other ISO K workpiece materials. The insert carries a neutral hand orientation, an 80-degree diamond (C) shape, and a KR chip breaker geometry. With a 0.5-inch inscribed circle and a corner radius of 0.03 inches (1/32 inch), it fits standard CNMG toolholders and delivers consistent chip control across moderate to heavy roughing passes.
This insert is intended for production turning environments where cast iron components are machined at medium to high material removal rates. The T-Max P series designation indicates compatibility with Sandvik Coromant T-Max P clamping toolholders that accept CNMG insert geometry. It is installed by machinists and CNC programmers in job shops, manufacturing facilities, and production lines running ferrous and gray cast iron parts. The KR chip breaker is optimized for interrupted and continuous cuts in cast iron, controlling chip formation and reducing built-up edge at the cutting zone. Four available cutting edges per insert support efficient tooling costs in high-volume operations.
Designed for use in CNMG-style toolholders within the Sandvik Coromant T-Max P series. The ISO code CNMG 12 04 08-KR 3225 allows cross-referencing with compatible clamping and pin-lock toolholders that accept CNMG 432 inserts. Primary workpiece material is cast iron (ISO K materials).
Insert seating and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist with the machine spindle fully stopped and all stored energy released per shop lockout/tagout procedures. Clean the insert pocket and seating surfaces before installing the new insert to ensure proper contact and prevent premature edge failure. Use the appropriate torque wrench and clamp hardware specified by the toolholder manufacturer — do not overtighten or substitute non-OEM clamping components. Index to a fresh cutting edge rather than rotating the insert while the machine is running.
