The SANDVIK COROMANT 6868506 is a CNMG-style indexable turning insert from the T-Max P series, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. It features a multilayer CVD coating of TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN applied over a solid carbide substrate in manufacturer grade 3225, a pairing suited for high-volume stock removal and interrupted cuts. The insert measures 12.90 mm in length with a 0.5-inch (12.70 mm) inscribed circle and an 80-degree diamond shape, delivering a rigid cutting geometry. The KM chip breaker geometry and neutral hand orientation make it a practical choice for machining cast iron workpieces in production environments.
This insert is primarily intended for cast iron machining (ISO material code K) in medium to roughing turning applications. The KM chip breaker promotes controlled chip formation and reduced cutting forces, which is especially useful in high-volume turning on horizontal and vertical CNC lathes. With four usable cutting edges per insert, it supports efficient tooling cost management in production shop and contract machining environments. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working in job shops, OEM production facilities, or maintenance machining will find this insert well suited to cast iron finishing and semi-finishing passes.
Designed for use in CNMG-style insert toolholders accepting a 0.5-inch inscribed circle insert with a 3/16-inch thick, 80-degree diamond geometry. ISO code CNMG 12 04 08-KM 3225. Compatible with clamp and pin style clamping systems per T-Max P series toolholder requirements.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom technicians. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the turret or toolpost de-energized before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench for the clamping screw to avoid insert movement or screw damage; refer to the toolholder manufacturer's specification for torque value. Inspect the insert seat and clamping components for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
