The SANDVIK COROMANT 6868405 is a carbide turning insert designed for precision metal cutting on CNC lathes and turning centers. Part of the T-Max series, this insert features a 60-degree triangle geometry with a neutral hand orientation, making it suitable for a wide range of external and internal turning operations. The substrate is carbide with a CVD-applied TiCN and Al2O3 multilayer coating, grade 3225, which provides wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The inscribed circle measures 0.3750 inches and the corner radius is 0.0313 inches, giving machinists a sharp, controlled entry with a rounded cutting edge style. Licensed CNC machinists and turning specialists are the primary installers of this insert.
This insert is suited for medium to finishing turning passes in production and job-shop environments. The T-Max series is a widely used platform in steel and alloy steel turning applications. The neutral hand configuration allows flexible toolholder pairing. Maximum depth of cut reaches 15.70 mm, supporting both light finishing and moderate roughing passes. The TPU insert style and clearance code P indicate a positive-geometry toolholder interface, and the tolerance code U designates a standard dimensional tolerance class. This insert is sold individually and is appropriate for shops running high-volume turning operations where consistent insert performance matters.
Designed for use with T-Max series clamp-style turning toolholders that accept TPU-style triangle inserts with clearance code P and tolerance code U. ISO designation TPUN 16 03 08 3225 can be used to cross-reference compatible toolholder systems.
Insert seating and clamping should be performed by a qualified machinist following the toolholder manufacturer torque and clamping specifications. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Do not exceed the toolholder or machine rated depth-of-cut limits for the selected insert geometry.
