The SANDVIK COROMANT 6227409 is a solid carbide indexable drill insert designed for use in indexable insert drills in metal cutting and machining operations. Built to the 880 insert style with a 1144 grade designation, this insert features a TiAlN and AlCr2O3 PVD coating for heat resistance and extended tool life in demanding cutting conditions. The parallelogram-shaped insert has an inscribed circle of 0.1890 inches (4.80 mm), a thickness of 0.0866 inches, and a corner radius of 0.0118 inches (0.30 mm). It is suited to right-hand cutting direction applications and incorporates an LM chipbreaker geometry for controlled chip evacuation during drilling operations.
This insert is intended for use in professional machining environments, including production shops, job shops, and manufacturing facilities running CNC or manual lathes and machining centers. The 880 insert style is a common platform for indexable drill bodies, making this a direct fit for 880-series toolholders. It is installed and changed by machinists and CNC operators as part of routine insert indexing or replacement during production runs. The LM chipbreaker geometry is well suited to light-to-medium feed drilling in steel and similar materials.
Designed as a replacement indexable drill insert for 880-series indexable drill bodies accepting parallelogram-style solid carbide inserts with the 880LM geometry and 1144 grade specification.
Insert indexing and replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the spindle fully stopped and machine in a locked-out state per applicable lockout/tagout procedures. Use the appropriate Torx or hex key as specified by the toolholder manufacturer when seating the insert — do not overtighten the clamping screw. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping components for wear or debris before seating a new insert. Dispose of used carbide inserts in accordance with local regulations for hard metal waste.
