The SANDVIK COROMANT 6199985 is a solid carbide turning insert in the WNMG332SM 1105 geometry, designed for indexable toolholders in CNC lathe and turning center applications. Carrying a TiAlN2 PVD coating, this insert is engineered for thermal resistance and edge durability when cutting difficult-to-machine materials. The 80-degree trigon shape (W insert style) provides six usable cutting edges per insert, improving cost-per-edge economics. The SM chip breaker geometry is optimized for controlled chip formation at moderate to high cutting depths, with a maximum depth of cut of 5.72 mm (0.2252 inches). The insert has a neutral hand orientation and is held via clamp or pin mounting systems.
This insert is intended for machining stainless steel as its primary workpiece material, with secondary suitability for superalloys and titanium. These material groups are among the most demanding in metal cutting, requiring a coating and substrate combination that resists built-up edge, work hardening, and heat accumulation. Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and profile operations on components in aerospace, medical, and chemical processing industries. Designed for use in standard WNMG-style indexable turning toolholders compatible with the T-Max P series. ISO designation WNMG 06 04 08-SM 1105 can be used to verify holder and insert pocket compatibility. Refer to toolholder documentation to confirm insert size code 332 fitment before installation.
Turning insert replacement should be performed by a qualified machinist or toolroom technician with the machine spindle fully stopped and all axes locked out per facility lockout/tagout procedures. Use a calibrated torque wrench and the appropriate Torx or hex key per toolholder manufacturer specifications when tightening clamp screws — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the insert. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before indexing to a new edge. Handle carbide inserts carefully to avoid chipping edges prior to use.
