The SANDVIK COROMANT 6198179 is a CCMT-style solid carbide turning insert designed for precision external and internal turning operations. Part of the CoroTurn 107 series, it features a TiAlN and AlCr2O3 PVD coating that delivers wear resistance and thermal stability when cutting difficult materials. The insert has an 80-degree diamond shape, a 3/8-inch inscribed circle, and a corner radius of 1/32 inch (0.0315 inches). With 2 cutting edges and a neutral hand orientation, it is suited for finishing and semi-finishing passes where controlled chip formation and surface quality are critical. Licensed HVAC or machining trade technicians familiar with CNC lathe tooling will recognize this as a drop-in screw-hold insert for ISO-compatible toolholders.
This insert is engineered primarily for machining superalloys and titanium alloys, materials classed under ISO workpiece code S. These are demanding materials common in aerospace, medical device, and energy component manufacturing. The SMC chip breaker geometry is optimized for light-to-medium depths of cut in these tough materials, with a maximum depth of cut of 0.3492 inches (8.87 mm). It fits CoroTurn 107 series toolholders that accept CCMT 09T3 geometry inserts. The screw-held clamping method ensures rigid, repeatable seating at the cutting edge.
Designed for use in CoroTurn 107 series screw-held toolholders accepting CCMT 09T3 insert geometry. Primary workpiece materials are superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S). ISO insert code CCMT09T308SMC1115 can be used to confirm toolholder compatibility.
Installation is performed by a qualified CNC machinist or toolroom technician. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully against the toolholder pocket locating surfaces before tightening the clamping screw; an under-torqued or over-torqued screw can cause insert movement or pocket damage. Follow the toolholder manufacturer's torque specification for the clamping screw, and inspect the pocket for chips or debris before seating a new insert.
