The SANDVIK COROMANT 5909080 is a solid carbide turning insert in the VNGG331-SGF geometry, part of the T-Max P series. It features a 35-degree diamond shape (V insert shape code) with a neutral hand orientation and a 3/8 inch inscribed circle. The insert is coated with TiAlN and AlCr2O3 applied via a PVD process, providing thermal and wear resistance suited to demanding cutting applications. With a corner radius of 1/64 inch and an insert length of 0.0945 inches, this insert is engineered for precision turning where tight tolerances and controlled chip formation are required. The SGF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing and semi-finishing operations on difficult-to-machine materials.
This insert is designed primarily for turning stainless steel (ISO material code M) and is also suited for superalloys and titanium (ISO material code S). Typical applications include finish turning and light semi-finish turning on CNC lathes and turning centers in aerospace, medical, and industrial manufacturing environments. The VNGG geometry with a G tolerance and N clearance code targets applications where dimensional accuracy and surface finish are priorities. Licensed machinists and CNC operators working on close-tolerance components will find this insert appropriate for those demanding material groups. The ISO insert designation is VNGG160404-SGF 1115.
Designed for use in VNGG-style toolholders that accept 3/8 inch inscribed circle inserts with a 0.150 inch hole diameter and clamp or pin holding. Primary workpiece material is stainless steel (ISO M); secondary workpiece materials are superalloys and titanium (ISO S). ISO insert code VNGG160404-SGF 1115.
Insert installation and indexing should be performed by a qualified machinist or CNC operator with the machine in a full stop, locked-out state per applicable lockout/tagout procedures. Ensure the toolholder pocket and seating surfaces are clean and free of chips before seating the insert. Do not over-torque the clamping screw; follow the toolholder manufacturer's specified clamping torque for VNGG-style seats. Inspect the cutting edge and chip breaker for chips or cracks before each use and index or replace as needed.
