The SANDVIK COROMANT 5909077 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TNMG style, designed for precision metal cutting in CNC lathe and turning center applications. Carrying the ISO designation TNMG 16 04 04-SF 1105, this insert features a 60-degree triangle shape with a neutral hand orientation and a 0-degree relief angle. The PVD-applied TiAlN coating and manufacturer grade 1105 provide wear resistance and thermal stability at the cutting edge. With six usable cutting edges per insert and an SF chip breaker geometry, it delivers controlled chip formation in demanding turning operations. Licensed machinists and CNC operators install this insert on compatible toolholders as part of the Sandvik T-Max P series.
This insert is intended for turning stainless steel as the primary workpiece material, with secondary suitability for superalloys and titanium. These are among the most demanding materials in precision machining, requiring a sharp, durable edge and a chip breaker geometry that manages built-up edge and work hardening. Typical applications include shaft turning, facing, and profiling operations in aerospace, medical, and industrial manufacturing environments. The SF chip breaker geometry is optimized for finishing to light roughing passes on these difficult-to-cut materials. Proper toolholder rigidity and appropriate cutting parameters are essential for best tool life in these applications.
Designed for use in SANDVIK COROMANT T-Max P series toolholders that accept TNMG-style inserts with a 3/8-inch inscribed circle. Verify toolholder pocket specifications and insert seat tolerances before installation. No additional specific compatible model numbers were provided in the product data.
This insert is installed by qualified machinists or CNC setup technicians following standard indexed insert change procedures. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before changing inserts. Use the appropriate torque wrench or clamp screw driver as specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the insert securely without over-tightening the clamp or pin. Inspect the insert pocket for chips or damage before seating a new insert, as pocket contamination will affect edge geometry and tool life.
