The SANDVIK COROMANT 5906824 is a solid carbide turning insert in the SNMG 543-SM geometry, part of the T-Max P series. It features a dual-layer TiAlN and AlCr2O3 PVD coating applied over a grade 1115 carbide substrate, providing thermal resistance and edge wear protection during interrupted and continuous turning operations. The insert is neutral-handed, square-shaped (90-degree included angle), with a 3/64-inch corner radius and an inscribed circle of 5/8 inch. With 8 available cutting edges per insert and the SM chip breaker geometry, it delivers consistent chip control in demanding applications. Licensed machinists and CNC turning center operators are the primary installers.
This insert is designed primarily for turning stainless steel and secondarily for superalloys and titanium. It fits standard SNMG-style toolholders used on CNC lathes and turning centers in both production-shop and job-shop environments. The SM chip breaker is optimized for medium-depth cuts and moderate feed rates on work-hardening materials. Typical applications include external and internal turning passes on austenitic stainless and nickel-based superalloy components where controlled chip evacuation and edge toughness are critical.
Designed for use in SNMG-style toolholders within the Sandvik Coromant T-Max P series. ISO code SNMG 15 06 12-SM 1115 identifies direct cross-reference fitment. Compatible with toolholders accepting an inscribed circle of 5/8 inch and a 1/4-inch insert hole diameter.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. Always power down and lock out the spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct torque driver or clamp screw specified by the toolholder manufacturer to seat the insert without cracking the carbide substrate. Inspect the insert pocket and locating pin for debris or wear before seating a new edge.
