The SANDVIK COROMANT 5888487 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for high-performance metal removal in industrial milling applications. Featuring a square insert shape with a positive rake angle of 27 degrees and a TiAlN PVD coating, it delivers controlled cutting action and heat resistance during steel and stainless steel machining. The insert carries a manufacturer grade of 1040 and an ANSI/ISO code of 490R-08T308E-MM 1040. With four cutting edges and a corner radius of 0.80 mm, it provides an efficient cost-per-edge value for production milling operations. It is installed by machinists and CNC setup technicians working with compatible 490 series milling cutters.
This insert is intended for milling steel and stainless steel workpieces, covering material grades P and M per ISO classification. It fits within the 490 cutter series platform and is suited to both roughing and semi-finishing passes where a maximum depth of cut of 5.50 mm is required. The MM chip breaker geometry supports positive chip formation and is particularly effective in applications requiring tight chip control on medium-alloy and austenitic stainless steel. Typical environments include CNC machining centers in job shops and production facilities handling structural steel and stainless components.
Designed for use with SANDVIK COROMANT 490 series milling cutter bodies. ANSI and ISO code 490R-08T308E-MM 1040 confirms fitment within the 490 cutter platform using insert size code 08T308.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC tooling technician. The machine spindle must be fully stopped and the cutter body secured before seating or replacing inserts. Use the appropriate torx or hex key to fasten the insert screw to the cutter body per the toolholder manufacturer seat-torque guidelines. Inspect the insert pocket and seating surface for chips or debris before installing a new insert to ensure proper seating and edge engagement.
