The SANDVIK COROMANT 5857580 is a laydown threading insert designed for external UN thread cutting on CNC lathes and threading-specific toolholders. Built from solid carbide with a PVD-applied TiCrAlN/TiN finish, this insert handles right-hand external threading at 20 threads per inch with a 60-degree included angle. It carries a manufacturer grade of 1135 and belongs to the CoroThread 266 series. The 3/8-inch inscribed circle and 5/32-inch thickness place it in a mid-range insert size commonly used in precision threading operations on steel and similar workpiece materials. Machinists and CNC operators in production and maintenance shops install this insert as a replaceable cutting edge in compatible CoroThread 266 toolholders.
This insert is suited for external UN thread forms on turned components across general manufacturing, job shop, and maintenance environments. The single-tooth-per-side geometry and F chipbreaker designation make it well-matched to controlled-chip threading passes. Its right-hand orientation applies to standard right-hand threaded features cut with the tool traversing toward the chuck. Solid carbide construction with PVD coating supports consistent thread form accuracy across multiple passes and tool changes.
Designed as a replacement insert for CoroThread 266 series toolholders accepting insert size code 16 with a 0.1732-inch (4.40 mm) hole diameter. Confirm toolholder seat geometry and clamping style before installation.
Installation is performed by qualified CNC machinists or toolroom personnel. Power down and lock out the machine before seating or removing inserts. Use the correct torx or clamping key specified for the CoroThread 266 toolholder to avoid over-torquing the insert screw. Inspect the pocket seat for chips or debris before seating the new insert to ensure proper contact and thread form accuracy.
