Product Description

The SANDVIK COROMANT 5853557 is a solid carbide milling insert engineered for demanding metal removal applications. Manufactured to the 490 series platform, it carries an S30T grade designation and a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process for enhanced wear resistance and thermal stability. The insert features a square shape with a positive rake angle of 32 degrees and four usable cutting edges, making it a cost-effective choice for high-productivity milling. The inscribed circle measures 8.50 mm and the insert is 3.30 mm thick. Licensed machinists and CNC tool-room technicians will recognize this as the 490R-08T308E-ML S30T geometry, conforming to both ANSI and ISO standards.

This insert is suited for milling stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium — ISO material groups M and S. The ML chip breaker geometry and corner-rounded cutting edge style are optimized for finishing and semi-finishing passes at moderate to aggressive feed rates. A maximum depth of cut of 5.50 mm supports versatile application in both roughing and finishing contexts on vertical and horizontal machining centers running 490-series cutter bodies. Right-hand cutting orientation applies.

Key Features

  • S30T solid carbide grade with PVD TiAlN coating for wear resistance in stainless steel and superalloy machining
  • Four cutting edges on a single-sided square insert maximize tool economy
  • ML chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip evacuation in gummy or stringy materials
  • Positive rake angle of 32 degrees reduces cutting forces on difficult-to-machine alloys
  • Corner radius of 0.80 mm (1/32 inch) with corner-rounded edge style for smooth surface finish
  • Maximum depth of cut of 5.50 mm accommodates both semi-finish and light roughing operations
  • Screw-held mounting for secure, repeatable insert indexing in 490-series cutter bodies

Compatibility

Designed for use with Sandvik Coromant 490-series milling cutter bodies. Insert size code 08T308 and ANSI/ISO designation 490R-08T308E-ML S30T confirm fitment within that platform. Right-hand cutting orientation required.

Installation Notes

Indexable insert replacement is performed by qualified machinists or CNC toolroom technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key specified by the cutter body manufacturer when tightening the clamping screw — do not overtighten, as this can fracture the insert. Inspect the insert pocket seating surface and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert.
