The SANDVIK COROMANT 5853511 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for use in R390 series face and shoulder milling cutters. Carrying the S40T manufacturer grade, this insert features a CVD-applied multilayer coating of TiCrN, Al2O3, and TiN for wear resistance and thermal stability during interrupted and continuous cuts. The parallelogram-shaped, single-sided insert has a positive rake angle of 17 degrees and a corner-rounded cutting edge style with a 0.0315-inch corner radius. It is screw-held and right-hand oriented. With two cutting edges per insert and a maximum depth of cut of 16.00 mm, it is suited for productive material removal in demanding applications. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling technicians handle installation in production or job-shop environments.
This insert is engineered for machining stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium — workpiece material codes M and S. The ANSI and ISO designation is R390-17 04 08M-PM S40T, placing it in insert size code 170408 with a PM chip breaker geometry. The R390 cutter series is widely used in aerospace, medical, and energy sector machining where difficult-to-cut materials demand a stable, high-positive insert geometry. The S40T grade targets M40 and S35 material classifications, making it a practical choice for stainless steel finishing and roughing operations as well as superalloy and titanium profiling passes.

Installation is performed by CNC tooling technicians or machinists following the cutter body manufacturer torque and seating specifications for the R390 screw-clamp system. The spindle must be fully stopped and locked out before changing inserts. Inspect the cutter pocket seat and clamping screw for damage or debris before seating a new insert. Do not mix insert grades or geometries within a single cutter body pass.
