The SANDVIK COROMANT 5853497 is a solid carbide milling insert designed for high-performance material removal in demanding machining applications. Manufactured to the ANSI and ISO standard designation R390-17 04 16E-PM S30T, this single-sided, right-hand insert features a parallelogram shape with a positive 23-degree rake angle and a corner-rounded cutting edge style. It carries a TiAlN coating applied via PVD process, which supports heat and wear resistance at the cutting edge. With two usable cutting edges and a corner radius of 0.0630 inches (1.60 mm), it is suited for precise shoulder milling passes in production environments. Licensed machinists and CNC tooling specialists are the primary installers.
This insert is intended for use in the R390 cutter series and is optimized for milling stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium — workpiece material codes M and S. The PM chip breaker geometry supports controlled chip formation in these difficult-to-machine materials. It fits R390-compatible toolholders that accept size 17 inserts and is held in place by a screw-style clamping method. Typical applications include shoulder milling and face milling operations on CNC machining centers in both production and job-shop environments where tool life and edge integrity in ISO M and S materials are critical.
Designed for use with R390-series milling cutters that accept insert size code 170416. ANSI and ISO designation R390-17 04 16E-PM S30T. Optimized for machining stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium (ISO material groups M and S).
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or CNC tooling technicians. Power down and de-energize all machine spindles before changing inserts. Seat the insert fully in the pocket and torque the clamping screw according to the toolholder manufacturer specification. Inspect the insert seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before each insert change to maintain proper edge positioning and prevent premature tool failure.
