The SANDVIK COROMANT 5853479 is a solid carbide milling insert in the R390 series, designed for shoulder milling operations on stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium. Manufactured to grade S40T and coated via CVD with a TiCN, Al2O3, and TiN multilayer stack, this insert delivers wear resistance and thermal stability in demanding cutting environments. The insert carries an inscribed circle of 6.80 mm, a thickness of 3.59 mm, and a 0.80 mm corner radius. It features a positive rake angle of 20 degrees and an ML chip breaker geometry optimized for light to medium cutting depths. ANSI and ISO codes are both R390-11 T3 08E-ML S40T. Installation is by screw-holding method.
This insert is suited for shoulder milling applications in ISO material groups M (stainless steel) and S (superalloys and titanium). The R390 series platform is widely used in both roughing and semi-finishing passes where controlled chip evacuation and edge security are required. The ML chip breaker geometry is particularly effective at moderate feed rates when workpiece surface finish and tool life consistency are priorities. This is a single-sided, right-hand insert with two cutting edges per insert, which is standard for indexable screw-lock toolholders in the R390 and M-32 cutter series families.
Compatible with R390 and M-32 cutter series toolholders. ANSI and ISO designation R390-11 T3 08E-ML S40T. Insert size code 11T308. Designed for use in shoulder milling cutters accepting parallelogram-style inserts with a 90-degree included angle and screw-lock retention.
Installation is performed by qualified machinists or tooling technicians. Power down and lock out the machine spindle before indexing or replacing inserts. Use the correct Torx or hex key for the clamping screw as specified by the toolholder manufacturer, and do not over-tighten or substitute fasteners. Inspect the insert pocket and clamping screw for wear or debris before seating a new insert to ensure proper contact and runout.
