The SANDVIK COROMANT 5754997 is a solid carbide turning insert in the TPMT style, designed for external turning operations on CNC lathes and turning centers. Part of the CoroTurn 107 series, this insert carries grade 1125 with a PVD-applied TiAlN and AlCr2O3 dual-layer coating for wear resistance and thermal stability at elevated cutting speeds. The triangular shape provides three cutting edges per insert, and the UM chip breaker geometry is engineered for positive-rake, light-to-medium cutting passes. The insert measures 0.4173 inches in length with a 1/4-inch inscribed circle and a 1/64-inch corner radius. It is installed using a screw-holding method and suits neutral-hand toolholders. Licensed machinists and CNC tool-setters are the typical installers.
The SANDVIK COROMANT 5754997 is suited for turning steel as its primary workpiece material. Secondary applications include stainless steel, superalloys, and titanium, covering ISO material groups P, M, and S. The CoroTurn 107 series targets external turning with positive geometry toolholders, making this insert well matched for finishing and semi-finishing passes where controlled chip formation and edge sharpness are critical. The UM chip breaker geometry promotes reliable chip evacuation in these material groups without requiring high feed forces.
Designed for use with CoroTurn 107 series toolholders accepting TPMT-style inserts with a 1/4-inch inscribed circle. ISO code TPMT 11 02 04-UM 1125 can be used to verify toolholder compatibility. Compatible workpiece materials include steel (P), stainless steel and superalloys (M), and titanium and superalloys (S) per ISO classification.
Installation is performed by a qualified machinist or CNC toolroom technician. Before changing inserts, ensure the machine spindle is fully stopped, the program is paused, and all relevant interlocks are engaged per shop safety protocol. Seat the insert firmly into the toolholder pocket and secure with the appropriate torque driver per the toolholder manufacturer's specifications — do not use impact tools on insert screws. Inspect the pocket seat and clamping screw for wear or debris before each insert change to maintain accurate edge location.
